HOSTING YOUR WEBSITE

Without getting into too much detail about technicalities, this subject requires that you make a thorough decision about:
  • The correct size?
  • Your hosting company's service desk or service panel [ISP - Internet Service Provider]?
  • How many domain names does your ISP manage?
  • Programming language support, i.e. PHP, ASP, Joomla!CMS, etc.
  • Is your hosting company active when it comes to updating anti-virus en anti-hack systems?

THE CORRECT SIZE?

Normally, a package size of 100MB should suffice. However if this is not the case you can should be able upgrade to a larger service package by placing a request with your hosting provider.

[TIP: check to see if the registration of your domain name is registered in yours or your company’s name. You can check this information by clicking here for .com, .net or .org domain name registrations.]

SERVICE DESK OR SERVICE PANEL

Good technical support provided by your hosting provider is a must! Your provider must at least offer a back-up facility in order to be able to retrieve any lost data.

It is also important to check how easy you can contact their service desk, either by phone (usually depends on which type of hosting service you have chosen) or by email.

[TIP: by checking the FAQ and/or help pages on your hosting providers’ website usually will give you a good impression on how well they are organized, check their website to see how email traffic is handled, for instance with pop-settings or through a mail server.]

HOW MANY DOMAIN NAMES DOES YOUR ISP MANAGE

A good, reliable indicator is the number of domain registrations and/or websites the hosting provider manages. Check to see if there are any well-known (company) names on the list. If there are 2000 or more, you can feel confident that they have built up enough experience and are well organized. However, you might want to check the references they have listed on their website.

PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE SUPPORT, I.E. PHP, ASP, Joomla!CMS, ETC.

Naturally the hosting platform must include the programming language that applies to your website. As far as ‘hacking sensitive’ open-source applications are concerned, you must ascertain whether your hosting provider offers excellent support and also you must find out if they have the technical ‘know-how’ for this type of problem.

IS YOUR HOSTING COMPANY ACTIVE WHEN IT COMES TO UPDATING ANTI-VIRUS AND ANTI-HACK SYSTEMS?

This is often a forgotten issue. However, the damage can be enormous if your website disappears or if it contains information and images that do not belong there. And that is not counting the 'rest damage' involved.
Ascertain whether your hosting provider has taken precautions for:
  • Anti-virus programmibg through your domain name registration for incoming emails
  • Anti-hack precautions on the servers
