BROWSERS AND SCREENRESOLUTIONS

Let me start by mentioning 5 different browsers:

All browsers have their “own” characteristics. It is very important that your website is displayed in each and every one of them.

Based on Fur Data visitors’ statistics the browsers used can be ranked in the following order:

  • 71% Explorer
  • 17% Firefox
  • 5% Safari
  • 2% Chrome
  • 1% Opera
  • 4% Others, among which Netscape Navigator 5, SeaMonkey en Flock

    Used Operating Systems:

  • 87% Microsoft
  • 8% Apple
  • 3% Linux
  • 2% Others

    SCREENRESOLUTIONS

Where screens are concerned we distinguish between monitors, flat screens and laptops. Existing monitors often have a maximum of up to 1280x768 pixels and are steadily becoming 'distinct'. The presently popular flat screens are quickly replacing traditional monitors.

Constantly decreasing prices charged for high-resolution screens have resulted in an increasing use. For example, the so-called wide-screen and full HD screen is very much on the up rise. Standard measurements are 1024x768 [23%] and 1280x1025 [30%] pixels.

Laptops with a resolution starting at 1280 pixels now account for 20% of all screens.
[Remark: above data is based on information from the Fur Group's website]

    CONSEQUENCES

The two largest browsers and high screen resolutions have quite a large impact on your website. It is important that they are clearly displayed in all browsers and also it is imperative that they are displayed in their proper proportion on the various screens available.

This means without horizontal scroll bars or else the website will be stretched to the full width and/or the website will not be aligned to the center.

With the arrival of wide-screens a new HD-standard for websites seems obvious. It won't be long before people start checking websites on their TV screen through a so-called "multimedia media center".
